2025 United Way of Kershaw County Chili Cook-Off

Chili Definition

  • Whatever you call chili, we call chili.

  • Chili may or may not contain beans.

  • Chili can be red, white, or any other color.

  • Chili may be prepared at home or on site, but we encourage on-site cooking as it adds to the fun and atmosphere of the event.

  • All DHEC rules and regulations related to food preparation and distribution must be followed.

  • All wild game chili must be approved prior to the event.

  • A complete set of rules will be provided after your team is registered.

Awards will be presented at 1:30pm

General Rules and Instructions

Get your entry forms in early!

  • Entry Fee: $50.00 per team

  • Chili Amount: Each team must prepare at least 3 gallons of chili to be eligible to win.

Judging Portions & Public Sampling

  • Judges’ Samples: 16 oz. of chili must be provided to the judges beginning at 11:30 AM in the container provided.

  • Public Samples: Small portion cups and spoons will be provided. Guests wearing armbands may sample chili from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM.

Teams

  • Teams may have an unlimited number of members.

  • 2 wristbands are included with the entry fee.

  • At least one member from each team must attend the cook’s meeting on the morning of the event.

Cooking, Supplies, & Safety

  • Teams are responsible for all ingredients, cooking devices, tables, coolers, tents, serving utensils, etc.

  • Each team will be given approximately 10′ x 12′ of space.

  • Electricity will be provided.

Traffic & Parking

  • The park area will open at 7:30 AM for drop-offs and will be closed to all traffic at 9:00 AM.

  • All vehicles must be removed from the park area by 9:00 AM.

  • Vehicles may re-enter the park after 2:00 PM.

  • All sites must be cleaned and cleared by 6:00 PM.

Voting

  • People’s Choice Awards will be given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams that receive the most votes.

  • Guests will vote with cash at your space for their favorite chili.

  • The top 3 teams with the most cash at the end of the day will be awarded the People’s Choice Awards.

Judging

  • Chili will be judged based on:

    • Aroma

    • Appearance

    • Consistency

    • Taste

  • Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.
