Pickleball is a racquet sport first invented in 1965 by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum. In an effort to entertain their families they attempted to set up a game of Badminton but did not have a shuttlecock. They improvised by using a Wiffle ball, lowering the net, and making paddles from plywood - inadvertently creating a new sport we now know as Pickleball.
Pickleball is a rapidly growing sport that combines elements of Tennis, Ping Pong, and Badminton. It is played on a badminton sized court with a low net similar to tennis. Players use a paddle slightly larger than a Ping Pong paddle and a perforated ball similar to a Wiffle ball. Pickleball is easy for beginners to learn and because of its low physical strain it is a great sport for all ages!
The United Way of Kershaw County is hosting its second Pickleball Tournament at the Camden Pickleball Plaza April 5, 6, and 7th. This tournament is a great way to play a fun competitive sport while also supporting the United Way of Kershaw County’s health and hunger initiatives.
Snacks, drinks, and t-shirts will be provided to participants throughout this event as well as lunch on Saturday. This will be fun for all who want to come out and play!
Registration ends March 22 so sign up today at https://www.pickleballtournaments.com/
