United Way of Kershaw County

ready readers

Ready Readers is a partnership between United Way of Kershaw County, Kershaw County School District, and AmeriCorps of South Carolina dedicated to building a love of reading in elementary school students who are struggling with literacy.

We believe that literacy lifts lives out of poverty. By reading to children early and often, we prepare them for academic success, brighter futures, and opportunities that last a lifetime.

How You Can Serve

There are two impactful ways to get involved with Ready Readers:

  • Volunteer – Give just one hour per week to read with a child and inspire a lifelong love of books.

  • Join AmeriCorps of South Carolina – For those 17 and older, this is a powerful way to make a difference while serving your community.

Our Impact

Since its launch, Ready Readers has:

  • Served 300+ elementary students across 9 schools

  • Placed thousands of books in the hands of children

  • Built confidence and improved literacy skills through caring, consistent mentorship

The Power of Volunteers

Our community and United Way are blessed by the dedication of so many volunteers. Their time, energy, and love for children are what make Ready Readers possible. Volunteers are not just helping with reading—they are shaping futures and transforming lives.

Together, we are ensuring that every child in Kershaw County has the chance to grow into a confident reader and a successful student.
